Past & Present Work

Project: No 1 Church View, Penmachno, North Wales
Client : Private
Date: 2004

History
The clients wanted to retain the historic integrity of this fine example of a Welsh miners cottage but at the same time modernise it using only 'green' building materials. Our remit was to insulate the whole house, including walls, remove all cement and modern paints and decorate using only solvent-free paints. The end-product was an extremely comfortable and healthy living environment.

Project

  • Limecrete floor - maintains the vapour permeability of the floor whilst meeting insulation standards of building regulations. Hydraulic lime uses far less energy in its production than ordinary portland cement.
  • New oak floor sourced locally from sustainable resources.
  • Walls lined with sheep's wool and lime plastered over reed.
  • Log burner installed to heat whole house.
  • All walls limewashed.
  • All woodwork painted in solvent free paint.
